EV Charger Installation: What Florida Homeowners Need to Know

Electric vehicles are becoming mainstream in Florida, and one of the first things new EV owners want is a Level 2 home charger. Plugging into a standard 120V outlet (Level 1) adds only 3–5 miles of range per hour — that's 40+ hours for a full charge. A Level 2 charger delivers 25–30 miles of range per hour, giving you a full charge overnight.

What Does EV Charger Installation Involve?

Electrical Assessment

First, we evaluate your electrical panel to determine if it has enough capacity for a 240V, 40–50 amp circuit. A Level 2 charger typically requires a dedicated 50-amp circuit. If your panel is already near capacity (common in older homes with 100-amp panels), you may need a panel upgrade before the charger can be installed.

Circuit Installation

We run a dedicated 240V circuit from your electrical panel to the charger location. This includes properly sized wiring (typically 6-gauge copper), a dedicated breaker, and any conduit needed to protect the wiring. The charger is usually installed in your garage or on an exterior wall near your parking spot.

Charger Mounting

We mount and wire your chosen EV charger, test the circuit, and verify proper operation. Most installations are completed in 2–4 hours.

How Much Does EV Charger Installation Cost?

ScenarioTypical Cost
Basic installation (panel nearby, short run)$500 – $1,000
Standard installation (moderate wire run)$1,000 – $1,800
Complex installation (long run, panel upgrade needed)$2,000 – $4,000+

The charger unit itself typically costs $300–$700 depending on the brand and features. Popular brands include ChargePoint, JuiceBox, Wallbox, and Tesla Wall Connector.

Important: All EV charger installations in Florida require a permit and inspection. As a licensed electrical contractor, we handle the entire permitting process to ensure your installation is code-compliant and safe.

Choosing the Right Charger

Hardwired vs. Plug-In

Hardwired chargers are permanently connected to your electrical system. They're cleaner looking and can deliver slightly more power, but they can't be easily moved. Plug-in chargers use a NEMA 14-50 outlet (the same as an electric dryer), making them portable if you move. We install both types.

Smart Features

Modern EV chargers offer WiFi connectivity, smartphone apps, scheduled charging (to take advantage of lower off-peak electricity rates), energy monitoring, and integration with solar systems. If you have or plan to install solar panels, a smart charger can prioritize charging when your panels are producing excess energy.

Amperage

Most home EV chargers are available in 32-amp and 48-amp versions. A 48-amp charger delivers about 20% faster charging but requires a 60-amp circuit. For most homeowners, a 40-amp charger on a 50-amp circuit provides the best balance of speed and cost.

EV Charging and Your Electric Bill

Charging an EV at home typically costs $30–$60 per month in electricity (based on Florida's average rate of ~$0.13/kWh and 1,000 miles of driving). Compare that to $150–$250/month in gasoline for a comparable gas vehicle. Many EV owners pair their charger with solar panels to reduce or eliminate charging costs entirely.
