Electrical Panel Upgrade: Signs You Need One

Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power to every circuit in your house, and if it can't keep up with modern demands, you're looking at safety hazards, inconvenience, and potential property damage. Here's how to know when it's time for an upgrade.

Warning Signs Your Panel Needs an Upgrade

1. Breakers Trip Frequently

If you're resetting breakers regularly — especially when running common appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or AC — your panel is telling you it's overloaded. Occasional trips are normal safety responses, but frequent tripping means your electrical demand exceeds your panel's capacity.

2. Your Panel Is 100 Amps or Less

Many older Florida homes were built with 100-amp panels. Modern homes with central AC, electric water heaters, kitchen appliances, and electronics typically need 200 amps minimum. If you're adding an EV charger, hot tub, pool heater, or home office equipment, you almost certainly need an upgrade.

3. You Still Have a Fuse Box

If your home still uses a fuse box instead of a circuit breaker panel, it's time to upgrade. Fuse boxes are outdated technology that can't safely handle modern electrical loads. Many insurance companies also charge higher premiums — or refuse coverage — for homes with fuse boxes.

4. Burning Smell or Discoloration

This is an emergency. If you notice a burning smell near your panel, see scorch marks or discoloration on the panel or surrounding wall, or hear buzzing or crackling sounds, turn off the main breaker and call an electrician immediately. These are signs of arcing or overheating that can cause a fire.

5. You're Planning Home Additions

Adding a room, converting a garage, installing a pool, or adding major appliances all increase your electrical demand. A panel upgrade should be part of any significant home renovation to ensure your electrical system can safely support the additional load.

Safety Alert: Federal Pacific Electric (FPE) and Zinsco panels are known fire hazards. If your home has either of these brands, we strongly recommend immediate replacement regardless of whether you're experiencing problems.

What Does a Panel Upgrade Cost?

Upgrade TypeTypical Cost
100A to 200A panel upgrade$1,800 – $3,500
200A to 400A panel upgrade$3,000 – $5,000
Fuse box to breaker panel$2,000 – $4,000
Sub-panel addition$800 – $2,000
Meter base replacement (if required by utility)$500 – $1,500

Costs vary based on the complexity of the work, the condition of existing wiring, and whether your meter base or service entrance needs to be upgraded to meet current code requirements.

What's Involved in a Panel Upgrade?

A panel upgrade isn't just swapping out a box. Here's what the process typically involves:

  1. Assessment: We evaluate your current panel, wiring, and electrical needs
  2. Permit: We pull the required electrical permit from your local building department
  3. Utility coordination: Duke Energy needs to disconnect and reconnect power
  4. Installation: We install the new panel, transfer circuits, and label everything
  5. Inspection: A building inspector verifies the work meets code
  6. Reconnection: Duke Energy reconnects your service

The entire process typically takes one full day, with power off for 4–6 hours during the actual panel swap. We coordinate the timing to minimize disruption to your household.
