Rising Energy Costs: How Solar Can Save You Thousands

Florida electricity rates have been climbing steadily, and Tampa Bay homeowners are feeling the pinch. The average Florida household now pays $150–$250 per month in electricity, with AC accounting for 40–60% of that total. Solar energy offers a way to lock in your energy costs and potentially eliminate your electric bill entirely.

The Case for Solar in Florida

Florida's Solar Advantage

Florida is called the Sunshine State for a reason. The Tampa Bay area receives an average of 246 sunny days per year and approximately 5.5 peak sun hours per day — making it one of the best locations in the country for solar energy production. A properly sized solar system in our area can offset 80–100% of your electricity usage.

Rising Electricity Costs

Duke Energy and other Florida utilities have implemented multiple rate increases over the past several years. The average residential rate in Florida is now approximately $0.13–$0.15 per kWh, and rates are projected to continue rising. Solar locks in your energy cost at installation — your panels produce the same amount of power whether rates go up 5% or 50%.

How Much Can You Save?

Monthly Electric BillSystem Size NeededEstimated System Cost*25-Year Savings**
$150/month6–8 kW$12,000 – $16,000$35,000 – $45,000
$200/month8–10 kW$16,000 – $22,000$48,000 – $60,000
$300/month12–15 kW$24,000 – $32,000$72,000 – $90,000

*After federal tax credit. **Assumes 3% annual electricity rate increase. Actual savings depend on system size, orientation, shading, and usage patterns.

Federal Solar Tax Credit (ITC)

The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) allows you to deduct 30% of the cost of your solar system from your federal taxes. This is a dollar-for-dollar tax credit, not just a deduction. For a $20,000 system, that's a $6,000 tax credit.

Important: The 30% federal tax credit is available through 2032, after which it begins to phase down. Installing sooner means you lock in the full credit.

Florida's Net Metering

Florida's net metering policy allows your solar panels to send excess electricity back to the grid. When your panels produce more than you're using (typically during midday), the excess flows to the grid and your meter effectively runs backward. You receive a credit on your electric bill for this excess production, which offsets your usage during nighttime and cloudy periods.

Solar + Battery Storage

Adding a battery storage system (like Tesla Powerwall or Enphase IQ Battery) allows you to store excess solar energy for use during:

  • Nighttime — Use stored solar energy instead of grid power after sunset
  • Power outages — Keep essential circuits running during storms and grid failures
  • Peak rate hours — Avoid higher time-of-use rates if your utility implements them

Battery systems typically add $8,000–$15,000 to the project cost but also qualify for the 30% federal tax credit.

Solar + EV Charging

If you drive an electric vehicle, solar panels can effectively make your transportation free. A typical EV uses about 300 kWh per month for average driving. Adding 2–3 extra panels to your solar system can offset this usage entirely. Combined with a Level 2 home charger, you're driving on sunshine.

Is Your Roof Ready for Solar?

Before installing solar, your roof needs to be in good condition with at least 10–15 years of remaining life. If your roof needs replacement, it makes sense to do both projects together — we can coordinate the roof replacement and solar installation as one project, saving you time and money.

Key factors for solar suitability:

  • Roof condition: Should have 10+ years of life remaining
  • Orientation: South-facing roofs produce the most energy, but east and west work well too
  • Shading: Minimal shading from trees or neighboring structures
  • Roof space: Approximately 100 sq ft per kW of solar capacity
