My Safe Florida Home Program: How to Get Up to $10,000 in Grants
The My Safe Florida Home program is a state-funded initiative that helps Florida homeowners strengthen their homes against hurricanes. The program offers free home inspections and matching grants of up to $10,000 for qualifying hurricane hardening improvements. If you're planning roofing work, window replacements, or other storm-related upgrades, this program can cut your costs significantly.
How the Program Works
Step 1: Free Home Inspection
The program begins with a free hurricane mitigation inspection conducted by a state-certified inspector. This inspection evaluates your home's vulnerability to hurricane damage and identifies specific improvements that would strengthen your home. The inspection covers:
- Roof covering, shape, and deck attachment
- Roof-to-wall connections (hurricane straps/clips)
- Window and door protection (impact-rated or shutters)
- Opening protection (garage doors)
- Wall construction type
Step 2: Receive Your Inspection Report
After the inspection, you'll receive a detailed report listing recommended improvements ranked by priority. Each improvement is assigned an estimated cost and the potential insurance savings it could generate. This report is yours to keep regardless of whether you proceed with the grant.
Step 3: Apply for the Matching Grant
Based on your inspection report, you can apply for a matching grant. The program matches your investment at a rate of $2 from the state for every $1 you spend, up to a maximum grant of $10,000. This means:
| Your Investment | State Match (2:1) | Total Project Value |
|---|---|---|
| $2,500 | $5,000 | $7,500 |
| $5,000 | $10,000 | $15,000 |
| $7,500 | $10,000 (max) | $17,500 |
| $10,000+ | $10,000 (max) | $20,000+ |
Step 4: Complete the Improvements
Choose a licensed contractor (like Elite Craft Pro Services) to complete the approved improvements. The work must be done by a licensed, insured contractor and must meet current Florida building code requirements.
Step 5: Receive Your Grant
After the work is completed and inspected, you submit your documentation and receive your grant funds. The process typically takes 4–8 weeks after submission.
Qualifying Improvements
The following improvements are eligible for My Safe Florida Home grants:
Roofing Improvements
- Roof covering replacement — Upgrading to hurricane-rated shingles, metal, or tile
- Secondary water barrier — Self-adhering underlayment on the entire roof deck
- Roof-to-wall connections — Adding or upgrading hurricane straps and clips
- Roof deck attachment — Re-nailing the deck to meet current wind code
Opening Protection
- Impact-resistant windows and doors — Windows and doors rated for hurricane impact
- Hurricane shutters — Permanent or removable shutter systems
- Reinforced garage doors — Wind-rated garage doors with bracing
- Entry door reinforcement — Impact-rated entry and sliding glass doors
Double Savings: Many of these improvements also qualify for significant homeowner's insurance premium reductions. A new roof with proper hurricane mitigation features can save you $500–$2,000+ per year on insurance — savings that compound year after year.
Eligibility Requirements
- The home must be a site-built, single-family residence (not a condo or mobile home)
- The home must have a homestead exemption
- The home's insured value must be $500,000 or less
